iPad Pro Upgrade!

So, those of you who read my blog would know I bought a 2018 11” 64GB iPad Pro back in 2019… Actually, I’m not sure who reads my blog, but I seem to be a giant hit with Russians according to the hundreds of spam comments I received.

My iPad Pro became my main device and my trusty buddy in blogging, reading, browsing, ozbargain-ing, editing and gaming. Po even commented I spend more time with the iPad Pro than her…which is partly true, but I will deny it vehemently.

Don’t get me wrong, there are still struggles when it comes to simple tasks like attaching multiple files/photos to emails. Downloading music from YouTube Audio library feels convoluted, where my search filters resets after every song I download.

But minor complaints aside, 90% of what I do works well. I edit the occasional birthday or cat video in LumaFusion. My blogs get published seamlessly to WordPress via Ulysses (when I do write them, haha). I do heaps of online shopping with and without Po’s knowledge Not to mention gaming on the Apple Arcade with a PS5 controller is so much fun.

In comes 4K videos…

Unfortunately, that all changed when I got myself a Go Pro 10 and started recording videos in 4K.

While my 2018 iPad Pro was still powerful enough to edit one to two 4K clips plus audio tracks, I only had 64GB storage, which filled up fairly quickly with all the extra storage space for video caching and exporting.

Despite deleting most of my games and transferring video files to my NAS and editing from there, I still get errors when it comes to video export time.

Mac Mini or MacBook Pro?

After whinging about sharing my first world problem of iPad storage woes. I consulted our family IT expert (my bro-in-law) on whether I should get a M1 Mac Mini or MacBook Pro to do video editing (which can also replace my 11-year-old PC).

He recommended going the 14-inch M1 MacBook Pro for portability, and did a quick check of how much it’ll cost with the specs I need. It ended up over $4000, which my bank account balance disagrees with.

M1 iPad Pro it is!

After recovering from the price shock of the MacBook Pro, I set my sight on the M1 iPad Pro instead. Po, being the generous sweetie that she is, offered to buy the iPad Pro as my 5-year anniversary present. Not only that, she went straight for the 512GB despite the higher price tag. And-in hopes that I won’t whinge again three years down the track.

My sister and bro-in-law jumped in and bought me the magic keyboard as an early birthday present. So, here I am writing in our courtyard on the new iPad Pro with the magic keyboard which I received yesterday.

The transition to my new iPad Pro was seamless thanks to iCloud backup. All my settings, LumaFusion projects, Ulysses, and apps were as they were on the old iPad Pro. It picked up where I left off, and I finished editing an existing project and uploaded it to YouTube straight away. It really is all about the Apple experience. <—Apple fan girl right here.

Now that there’s no more excuses barriers for me to edit the videos, here’s to hoping I’ll be more productive… but first, let me finish this event in Merge Dragon.

P.S. I secretly want to keep my old 2018 iPad Pro for gaming, but should probably sell it while it still has value instead of hoarding it like I did with my 1st generation iPad Mini.
