Koala Paddington Bed Base review

When Po moved into her currently rental, she had to ditch her bed base because the staircase was too narrow for it. Po being picky pedantic someone who has standards (unlike me), opted to sleeping with the mattress on the floor until she found a bed base she really likes.

Cue a year and a half later — Po fell in love with the Koala Paddington Bed Base and pulled the trigger when there was a 15% discount on bed bases during Click Frenzy. Delivery was super fast (and free!) — 3 giant boxes (around 20kgs each) got delivered the next day.

Word of caution if you are weaklings like us- I made the mistake of making Po carry the first box upstairs with me, and her neck and shoulders started hurting immediately. So, I would recommend unboxing and taking the frame up piece by piece if you have stairs.

It looked so easy to assemble in Koala’s YouTube clip, not so much in real life. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still easier than assembling IKEA furniture since there are no allenkeys required. Only tools that were needed were our hands.

The instructions were simple enough, but the struggle was real, putting the bed frame together took over half an hour because we couldn’t get one side of the bed frame to line up and hooked in properly. After sitting on the floor and contemplating about life and what choices led me to this point in life, I regained strength in my arms and somehow this time the bed frame wedged into place.

Once we got over that hurdle, it was smooth sailing for the rest of the bed frame…until we realised the panel should have been installed before we screwed the bed head in place. So we had to redo that too.

After a 2-hour ordeal, we got a fantastic-looking bed base with storage behind the headboard for hiding pillows/books/chargers.

Me being the romantic that I am, suggested that we should rub heat cream all over each other and take ibuprofen for the impeding muscle soreness. Yup, I’m a smooth player who’s got game (not really).

All in all, the Koala Paddington bed base was a good height even for a shortie like me and there’s enough space underneath the bed frame for storage (or the cats to hide under). Delivery was quick, assembly is relatively easy(?) and it’s a great-looking product. We came away with sore muscles, but it was well worth it.

  1. Hi there,

This is likely a random comment, but I just wanted to ask if you recall how the components were organised in the boxes you received.

I’m looking to get this on the secondhand market – unfortunately the seller received only 2 out of 3 boxes and the bed slats are missing. Do you recall if the box with the slats also have other key structural items in it? And were the gum nuts securing the slats down also included in that missing box?

Hope to hear back from you soon! Thank you!

    Kind regards,
    Esther

    • Hi Esther,
I tried to dig through old photos to see if I had a photo showing how the components were organised in the boxes but couldn’t find any 🙁
Koala supposedly has a 120 nights return policy so not sure why the seller didn’t raise a query for the missing box?

You might be better off getting it directly from Koala (they have a Vday sale now!) as the bed slats are not standard ones.
Thanks for commenting and sorry I couldn’t help you!
